3 Reasons for Your Facility to Switch to Geo

JK Mechanical has been Lancaster’s leader in Geothermal Heating & Cooling solutions since 1989. Geothermal Heat Pumps quietly and reliably harnesses the renewable energy generated by the Sun that is stored in the ground near the Earth’s surface. While Geothermal Heating and Cooling is not a one-size-fits-all option, for many business, facility, or non-profit owners, geothermal HVAC can be an efficient, long-lasting comfort solution. Continue reading for three major reasons facility owners should consider installing a geothermal heat pump during your next build, renovation, or replacement:

1.      Significant Operating Savings

Geothermal heat pump systems are incredibly efficient, even compared to air source heat pumps. According to the EPA, geothermal systems use 25-50% less electricity than a standard heating and cooling system, and can even reach 300%-600% efficiency on the coldest winter nights. Geothermal heat pumps use well loops to take advantage of the temperature beneath the earth, which stays at a constant 55 degrees year-round. In the winter, the fluid in the well extracts heat from the earth and carries it into your home. In summer, the system reverses, and takes heat from inside, removing it into the cooler ground. Therefore, no matter whether you are heating or cooling, your system is using less electricity (and no combustion or fossil fuels!) to deliver the same, or better, comfort.

2.      Sustainability BenefitsGeothermal loop installation

Since Geothermal heat pumps are more efficient and use less electricity, you are lowering your carbon footprint while also lowering your utility bills- a huge win/win! Geothermal heating and cooling runs on clean, renewable energy and uses no combustion or fossil fuels, making it the smart choice for both your budget and our planet. According to WaterFurnace, installing one residential Geothermal HVAC system is equivalent to planting 750 trees! Plus, geothermal heat pumps tend to have a longer lifespan than traditional heat pumps or furnaces, meaning that less resources are used for installation over time.

Bonus tip: While geothermal heat pumps take advantage of “free” energy stored in the earth, they do still require some electricity to “move” the heat as required. At the JK Mechanical office, the electricity that powers our geothermal heating and cooling (and the rest of our office and warehouse!) comes from our rooftop solar PV array, meaning that our office’s climate control is 100% renewable from start to finish. Whether you are especially committed to going green or are interested in benefitting from the great tax incentives for renewable energy, geothermal + solar can be a powerful combination.

3.      Federal Tax Incentives

With the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act and related incentives for geothermal heating and cooling, the current federal tax incentives for geo and other sustainable building improvements are unprecedented in JK Mechanical’s decades of geothermal experience. Geothermal heat pumps are now eligible for the 30% tax credit through 2032, with an additional 10% tax credit available for select commercial domestic-produced equipment (such as WaterFurnace, for which JK Mechanical is a GeoPro dealer). Plus, for the first time, this tax credit is available to non-profit organizations as well. While JK Mechanical is not an accounting or financial institution, our team is available to discuss the financial incentives available to you, provide the documentation and installation requirements necessary to take advantage of the credit, and to provide the comfort solution that makes the most sense for your facility and your budget.
