Winter Safety Tips from JK Mechanical
At JK Mechanical, our team of experts is committed to providing you and your family with smart, safe home comfort solutions. Over the winter, we spend more time indoors and contend with extreme weather, making home safety and maintenance an even more significant priority. We recommend following these smart home safety guidelines as we wait for warm weather to return:
- Check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors regularly. More time spent indoors can increase the risk of CO2 exposure, particularly if you heat with a furnace. If your detectors are more than 10 years old, the entire device may need to be replaced.
- In inclement weather, check and clear the outdoor furnace vents of any snow, ice, or other debris.
- If you haven’t already, be sure and schedule your Precision Tune-Up with one of JK Mechanical’s service technicians. At your PTU, the technician will thoroughly inspect your entire heating system to ensure that it is running as safely as possible.
- If you are using an electric blanket or heating pad for some extra warmth, be sure that all cords and plugs are in like-new condition and choose a model with an auto-shutoff timer.
- If you are using a portable generator during a power outage, follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions for use and only use outdoors in well-ventilated areas. If your
area frequently loses power or you want to eliminate the risk of outages altogether, consider upgrading to an Automatic Standby Generator for 24/7 protection.
- Schedule a Whole Home Electrical Safety Inspection with one of JK Mechanical’s experienced electricians. Our technician will check your wiring, fuse box, panel, and other electrical components so that you can be sure that everything is in a safe condition. For a limited time, JK Electrical is offering a FREE Whole Home Electrical Inspection ($129 value) when you schedule a free assessment for a Whole Home Standby Generator. Request your free estimate before March 31st in order to take advantage of this offer.
- During a cold snap, open cabinet and closet doors around pipes to allow better airflow and prevent freezing.
- In extreme temperatures, allow the pipes to drip or trickle slightly in order to keep from freezing.
- Small leaks can turn into expensive repairs if they are not noticed or fixed in time. The Lyric Wi-Fi Freeze & Leak Detector is a small sensor installed in leak or freeze-sensitive areas of your home. This device sends an alert via smart phone to let you know if there’s a problem, giving you a chance to fix an issue or schedule a service call before a little leak turns into a big problem.
