Home Heating and Cooling Tips
Whether the home you own is your first or your fifth, it’s important to know how to keep it running in an energy efficient manner. Creating a budget is only half the battle. Monthly costs on top of any mortgage payments you may have can eat away at your bank account. Luckily, there are a few tips that can help you cut some costs while keeping your energy expenses low and your home comfortable.
Heating and cooling is an essential part to any homeowner, especially during the harshly cold months of winter. Staying comfortable and warm is important, which is why there are easy and energy efficient ways to increase the airflow in your household, while keeping the cost down.
Rearrange for Better Airflow
Give your home or condo a new look and feel while increasing air flow throughout each room. Your furniture, draperies or decorations could easily be covering registers, vents, radiators, and baseboards. If obstructed, the air will not be able to circulate into the room, calling for constant thermostat adjustments.
Tip: Leave up to a foot of space to allow for proper ventilation.
Lower Your Thermostat
When you’re leaving the house in the morning, it’s easy to forget that you turned the heat or air conditioning up the day before. Remembering to return your thermostat to it’s resting temperature can save you big bucks each month.
Tip: If you heat with a gas or oil furnace, adjust the thermostat up to 5 degrees while you are away or sleeping. If you have a heat pump, we recommend no more than a 3 degree setback during winter.
Program Your Thermostat
Having a programmable thermostat can solve the problems of turning the air up and down in your home as you come and go. Follow these instructions to learn how to properly use a programmable thermostat.
Tip: Set the thermostat to kick off when you leave for work and kick on right before you get home.
